DNS Migration

Migrating DNS can have hidden issues. Were all the TXT records copied? What about the format for DKIM keys? Don’t even mention MX records for mail.

Migration Work Flow

  • Confirm access to DNS records on both old and new nameservers
  • Review records for any possible issues
  • Copy over records from the old nameserver to the new
  • Test the new nameserver responds with the correct test records
  • Change the domain registrar’s nameserver setting to use the new nameservers
  • Confirm the nameservers have been changed and test records again

Downtime Mitigation

  • We confirm records have been copied before switching the nameservers
  • Important records are double checked

Requirements

  • Access to DNS records manager (nameservers) on both source (old) and target (new) nameservers
    • Delegated access is best
    • DNS records may be within a control panel such as Plesk, Directadmin, cPanel, and etc. If the panel does not support secondary users, the user login would be needed.
  • Access to domain registrar for nameserver switch
    • Only needed if you want us to do the nameserver switch and have a streamlined hands off migration
